Finger Amputation: first aid to save the finger

Amputation of finger or amputation of any other part of a member is a serious injury.

A relocation after amputation of finger may be made provided that the amputated finger is taken to the hospital in a timely manner and correctly.

Here, I will examine the first aid and management for the transport of cut part.

Of paramount importance is the life of the patient. Before directing attention to amputee part one should exclude the presence of other life-threatening injuries. Once they are excluded the attention can be directed to the amputated parts.

Bleeding of the strain should be controlled with a dressing.Ligatures and Hemostatic (forceps) should not be used because they can damage blood vessels and nerves making re more difficult implementation. If the bleeding is not controlled by a pressure bandage a pneumatic tourniquet or sphygmomanometer may be used temporarily. The amputee must be cooled to 4 degrees centigrade to its chances of maximum survival. After the party it should be cleaned with ringtones or saline solution (if none is available, and then will make the mineral water).Cleaning after that part is covered with a sterile gauge soaked in a solution of saline or ringtones. It is then kept in a closed plastic bag. This plastic bag is kept in a box of ice.Make sure that part's not coming in direct contact with the ice.Alcohol and formaldehyde should not be used to store the amputee portion. If the part is incompletely broken then any kinking or torsion tissue should be corrected. The wound is then covered with a sterile dressing (clean cloth if no sterile dressing is available).Splint is applied to the support of the party.A bag of ice is kept (not directly in contact with skin) on the part.

It you are in the middle of no where, then the best thing you can do is to encapsulate the finger amputated in a wet handkerchief and rush to the nearest hospital.

How a dressing is applied?

Dressing is applied bandage with one or two turns circumference around the limb followed by a cross on the opposite side (such as moving around the circumference of a circle then along the diameter). It is repeated again and again alternate layers of cotton and laminate bandage. Finally an elastic bandage is applied.

After how long can an amputee part be re established?

With muscle parts (like the hand and forearm) re implementation must begin within 6 hours if they are not cooled. This can be extended to 12 hours after cooling to 4 degree centigrade.

For parts with no muscle (fingers and toes) re implementation must begin within 8 hours if they are not cooled. This can be extended to 30 hours after cooling to 4 degree centigrade.

I hope that the information provided was useful. If you have any query on amputation of a finger, you can post to the contact me page.
